It was an interesting interview with guitar god Joe Satriani from Ultimate Guitar. Apparently, Ultimate Guitar is not only the “best source” of guitar tabs –if you want to learn songs quickly. It is also a good source of interesting stories about guitar, guitar players and their rig.

I never realized that G3 is 10 years old. It has been that long since Joe Satriani, Steve Vai and another guitar player they recruit had been playing. And as the interview stressed, “There is not stopping it.” Joe added:

I mean, it will be redefined and redefined and I think the key to it is that new life will be breathed into it with the changing participants. And I can see an acoustic one too, I can see a blues one, I can see a thrash one and a fusion one. I can see all different avenues and I can even see a blending of like we’ve done before. Like Steve and I went out with Robert Fripp once and we went out with an acoustic player named Adrian Legg. So we’ve done pretty unusual ones too. And I did one in South America a few weeks ago with John Petrucci and Eric Johnson and though it was a very unusual pairing, it was very complimentary. We played in front of audiences that were three times the size of what we’re doing in Australia. So the changing nature of it is very attractive to the guitar player audience out there. I think just in concept, the whole G3 concept is something that is just getting started really.

G3 is a concept involving 3 guitar slingers jamming together in a live concert. This is Joesat’s brainchild. For years, I’ve been watching different versions. One featured Eric Johnson, a Texas-based guitar player who won a Grammy Award for guitar pieces like Cliffs of Dover. Then later, it had Yngwie Malmsteen, the European monster guitar player who popularized classical-like guitar compositions, which balled over a lot of the speed and thrash metal freaks. Until today, I still can’t play a single note that he does. I think it’s really not my thing. I’d rather play Joe!!! hahaha.

According to the interview, G3 hopes to feature other players like Eddie Van Halen and Brian May. That would be great if it does happen.
